Is this art or just punk art junk?

From Reno News and Review, October 7th edition: Vol. 16, Issue 33.
Omar Pierce, 25, is interviewed by Brad Bynum on Page 19 of the above sited publication. The subject title is "Wild Horses" in an "Art of the State" section.
In the article/publicity review, Pierce intimates that we Northern Nevadans have an "underdog mentality." A statement that lacks credulity and good sense. He calls Lockwood "dirtier and greasier" in a "classic Western image." Ending with a song lyric from a group whose name befits a seasonal holiday approaching, Pierce, through Bynum, unthinkingly ends his Our Hearts Don't Change publicity ditty with the smirking phrase, "Crucify the insincere."
See his work at Bibo 3, 945 Record Street, Reno starting October 10th at 6pm.

What did we do to deserve this?
Someday, somehow people around this area will realize that "The Dump" no longer is in Lockwood. It is in Mustang, right up the road from the now-gone Mustang Ranch. It is hard to break old habits.

Coming July 26th:NDOT Project on Interstate 80

Connie Butts of the Canyon General Improvement District released a notice that a major improvement project on Interstate 80 may limit access to Lockwood and Mustang. It will begin July 26th and will run until completed. Single lane traffic is to be expected, with diversions at Mustang and Lockwood when traffic cannot get through. Expect delays to approach 30 minutes at times.
It is advised that extra time be allowed to get into town during this period.

What is the River District Coalition?

What is the  River District Community Coalition (RDCC)?
The coalition is a group of Lockwood residents coming together to come up with and carry out new
ideas to better and bring the community together.
The Purpose.. A unified community!
This is a group that will get things done. RDCC members—that could be YOU too—have
prioritized the needs and wants of community residents into three:
1) Build community connections;
2) Create positive opportunities for children and youth; and
3) Address the needs of our senior neighbors and residents.

Is the RDCC like all other community groups?
The answer is “no.” Why? Because we have guiding principles that keep our group productive and
respectful and we work on behalf of all residents of Lockwood. Our Guiding Principles are:
• We all have shared goals to be more united.
• Honesty and trust are MUSTS: speaking your mind but speak the truth.
• Stay committed; we all want change.
• Stay calm and get things done. Your voice will be heard if it’s clear and controlled.
• LISTEN and share ideas; everyone has a voice.
• LISTEN and UNDERSTAND. We must not only listen, but also HEAR what is being said.
• We have ideas and we have answers. Do YOU? JOIN US.

When and where do we meet?
Our next meeting is Wednesday, July 14, 2010 at the Community Center from 5:30-7:00 p.m.
We were meeting every second Thursday from 3:30-5:00 p.m., but want more people, especially
those working during the day to be able to attend. We have changed our meetings to every
second Wednesday of the month from 5:30-7:00 p.m. as a consequence. Community Chest,
Inc. has provided a facilitator who helps organize us, keep the meetings running according to our
guiding principles and provides us with summarizes of our minutes and follow-up tasks. As we
move forward, we will take this role on with their support. The remaining meetings for 2010 are:

River District Community Coalition Newsletter

“A unified community.”

Vol. 1 Issue 4                                            June 10, 2010

Welcome to the fourth issue of the RDCC newsletter.  We have had one meeting since our last newsletter—five regular RDCC meetings where our group has continued to plan around our vision (above) and three priorities: safe and positive opportunities for children; connecting and protecting our seniors; and connecting our communities.  We met in May on the 13th to initiate plans for door-to-door resident survey.  Minutes from that  meeting can be found on “Lockwooding.blogspot.com.”

At our last meeting in May the group generated a list of questions for their upcoming Door-To-Door survey.  In our June meeting the final set of questions was approved and plans were set for gaining approval from and notifying residence boards and individuals of the timeframe for the survey: July 10-16, 2010!  RDCC plans to survey all residents in Lockwood in all developments as well as on the outskirts of the river district in the Peri Homestead.  They will start this intensive effort on Saturday June 10^thbetween 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. and continue in the late afternoons/evenings until Friday, June 16^th.  Look for your neighbors and volunteers at your door during that time and please take a few minutes of your time to provide input to the group as they hear from each and every one of you what your thoughts are on issues from community physical improvements to programming for seniors and children.

The topic of conversation for our June 10^th  meeting centered around the advantages and limitations to the current area proposed for some of the physical improvements to the community. Members of the Peri Farm attended the meeting and shared that people around their area use the land for walking dogs and exercising.  They want to be kept apprised of any work that goes on in crossing the ditch so that they can plan accordingly.  Others in attendance were concerned about actual donations that had been committed or received for improvements and whether the county would have sufficient funding to complete the improvements that residents indicate are priorities.  Members of the RDCC will plan to attend the next Planning Commission meeting in August and will petition for more frequent meetings in the Lockwood community for all county boards.  Finally, most in attendance felt it was important to have representation from the county at their meetings given the nature of the Lockwood priorities and the county’s plans for improvements, to make sure that open communication is maintained for all decisions.

The group plans to notify residents of their meetings and activities through these means:  Flyers and short announcements in CGID bills, Rainbow Bend Newsletter, Postings and flyers at the Sheriff’s office, Lockwood store, the Clothing Exchange and the Community Center, and the Lockwooding.blogspot.com, of course as well as  Storey County’s website.

The flyer for public distribution should include the meeting date, time, location, purpose and a note to check-out the full minutes on the blog and county website.
